The Historical Society is dedicated to collecting and preserving significant records and materials related to the history of Windham County. The Research Center, located in the original 1936 County Museum building, houses primary resources including: journals, ledgers, letters, genealogical resources, maps, photographs, newspapers, town and county histories, church records, books and pamphlets, scrapbooks, posters, prints, and broadsides. The Center’s portrait gallery compliments a quiet library space for researchers.

Plan Your Visit
Location - 574 VT Route 30 , Newfane, VT 05345. The Research Center in Newfane Village is a short walk from the County History Museum in the 1825 Jail Building, as well as the West River Railroad Museum on Cemetery Hill Road.
Times of Year - Open by appointment from Memorial Day weekend in May through Indigenous People’s weekend in October. To make an appointment, contact the Historical Society by phone (802 365-0227) or preferably by email: info@historicalsocietyofwindhamcounty.org
Costs - Admission is free to the Research Center. The Curator and volunteers are available to assist visitors with brief searches by providing available resource materials for study. More extensive research assistance may be possible for an agreed upon fee, based on $20 per hour plus $1.00 per page photocopies if applicable.



Important Information for Visitors
- Genealogy requests may be submitted directly to us by using this form.
- Please note that while inquiries are fielded year-round, access to materials in the Research Center is unavailable during the ‘off-season.’
- Researchers may bring pencils, loose leaf paper, and laptops into the Research Center. Digital photography is prohibited without the consent of the Curator.
Genealogy Research Center Timeline
1927 Windham County Historical Society founded
1936 Historical Society of Windham County cornerstone laid
2023 Historical Society of Windham County renovates and repurposes the Windham County Jail building to be the County History Museum.
2024 The Society moves its major exhibits and collection to the County Jail Building and the 1936 building is repurposed as County Archive and Genealogy Research Center.
