In 2015, underwater explorer and shipwreck diver Annette Spaulding rediscovered one of two petroglyphs that have been submerged in the Connecticut River ever since the creation of the Vernon Dam over 100 years ago. Spaulding is the first to locate the petroglyphs which were first observed in 1806 by Edward Augustus Kendall. The petroglyph sites have been the focus of Spaulding’s search efforts for nearly 30 years. Now, this extraordinary archaeological carving helps to tell Vermont’s prehistoric story.
