Old Newfane Common, Top of Newfane Hill Road
Join us and special guest, Niels Rhinehart, Archaeologist and Board Member of the Vermont Archaeology Society, as we explore the original site of the Shire Town of Newfane where it was first settled on top of Newfane Hill. The walking tour of the Old Common will highlight the history of the first Meeting House, County Court House, the cellar holes of the old County Jail, the first Schoolhouse, and the homes and enterprises of some of Newfane’s first settlers on the Hill. We’ll also see Newfane’s first cemetery containing stone markers that have only recently been discovered. Wear sturdy shoes for walking on uneven terrain.
